Curious sunrises-- figures

Ice crystals cause pillars as they drift down like flower petals. The crystals (blue lines in the drawing) must be aligned almost horizontally--tipped slightly down. Sunlight grazes the crystal bottoms and bounces down to the eye. Light seems to come from a vertical shaft instead of the actual stack of reflections.

Imagine a sun pillar drawn through the stack of ice crystals and you have the whole picture.
